About Wuhu
Wuhu is located on the south-side of the Yangtze River. It has a population of 700,000 in the downtown area (2.2 million in Provincial total) and a long history going back more than 2000 years. It is located near historic and scenic sites such as Yixian County¡¯s Three Ancient Villages, Jiuhuashan ('Nine Glorious Mountains') and Huangshan ('Yellow Mountain'), which is said to be China's most beautiful mountain.
There are many interesting places in China and Wuhu is conveniently situated near all the main transportation links. With Shanghai five hours away by train/bus and Nanjing City and Airport only one and a half hours by bus, travel is easy. Ferries also go upstream to the Three Gorges, or downstream to Shanghai.
Although it's a modern city, Wuhu is not as westernised as other large Chinese cities and the cost of living in Wuhu remains very low - around one-third of the cost of living in Beijing or Shanghai.
A modern downtown area has shopping malls, teahouses, bars and nightclubs. However, not all of the city is modern, so students can experience some of the authentic daily life of ordinary Chinese people.
In the summer months (Jun-Sept) temperatures exceed 30 degrees celcius, so buildings are air-conditioned. In the short winter period (Dec-Feb) temperatures can drop below 0. For the rest of the year temperatures are mild.
There is a small community of foreign residents in Wuhu. Some study Chinese, some teach English at various institutions, and others work for companies based in the city. Encountering a westerner often surprises the locals, but this means that making friends is very easy and that there will always be someone who can offer their help as a guide.
Medical Care

The Company provides accident insurance for all employees on a full year contract, which covers hospital fees in case of accidents or injuries.

Due to the difference between Chinese and UK hospital facilities, separate insurance is recommended to cover any emergency flights home.

We recommend that you consult your doctor or travel clinic about vaccinations before traveling.

Around Wuhu
Guang Ji Temple Shen Shan Park Zhe Shan Park
Only a ten minute walk from the Aston office is a delightful Buddhist Temple. Here you can glimpse the comings and goings of monks, wander through exquisite shrines and join the myriads of people burning incense and praying before Buddha. Ten minutes by road from Aston, Shen Shan Park features a lake and plenty of walking and cycling paths. Next to Guang Ji Temple, this hilly park provides a respite from the hectic hustle and bustle of modern-day China. Under leafy ginko trees, stone paths meander through shrines and pagodas. There is also a small zoo nearby.
Ting Tang Park Zhong Shan Road Shopping Street Mirror Lake Park
On the outskirts of town, this large public park is a great place to walk through tranquil tree-lined lanes, and admire the crystal-clear lake which is dotted with islands and small floating houses. Many festivals and activities are held here throughout the year. You can hire rowing boats and even go horse riding. Also known as Walking Street, this pedestrian-only avenue is lined with the most modern and expensive businesses. Whether you are craving western food, western electronics or western clothes, you¡¯ll find it here. Modern China at its finest. The beautifully landscaped Mirror Lake Park is only a step out of the front door of the Aston office. The calm, still waters of the lake are surrounded by willow trees, ancient Chinese architecture, hectic markets and the afore-mentioned Walking Street.
Ma Ren Mountain Tao Xin Lake District Jiu Zi Square
Ma Ren Mountain will astound you with its breathtaking landscape of jagged yellow rocks jutting out at odd angles from the tree canopy. The Buddhist temple at the base of the mountain is also spectacular. This must-see tourist attraction is only an hour-long bus trip out of town, and provides a great insight into rural China. Half an hour away by road, this sleepy fishing community is great to visit in summer, when the lakes are covered with millions of beautiful lotus blossoms. It demonstrates that a slower pace of life is still possible in modern China. Next to Mirror Lake and Walking Street, this patriotic square is filled with statues, the centerpiece of which is an impressive 20-metre-high bronze pillar depicting Chinese phoenixes, surrounded on all sides by fountains. In the morning the park is packed with old people practicing Tai Chi, who will be glad to teach you--an amazing experience!
He Ping National Park French Cathedral Olympic Sport Centre
Located outside Wuhu in Naning County, He Ping National Park is good for bird watching. This picturesque French Jesuit Cathedral on the banks of the Yangtze is well worth a visit, and services are held there regularly. At Christmas, the church is especially packed, with Chinese exchanging gifts in celebration of this imported holiday. As part of the build-up to the 2008 Beijing Olympics, this modern stadium stands as a testament to the progress of modern China. They also hold concerts there.
Bin Jiang Da Dao Riverside Park

Opening in 2008, this new park will follow alongside the Yangtze River, offering a unique location to walk or cycle at leisure.
